The Folk Dance Scene for January 2002

January 4 (Friday): The Slavonian Traveling Band will be playing music for dancing at the Stanford Folk Dance Club, at Flex-it Aerobics Studio, 425 W. Evelyn Ave., Mountain View at 8:00 P.M. Admission is $6.00.

January 9 (Wednesday): Hungarian dances from Kaoltaszeg in Transylvania will be taught from now through February at Menlo Park Recreation Center, between Burgess and Alma, Menlo Park. At 7:45 P.M. there will be singing, followed by teaching from 8:15 to 9:30, then dancing from 9:30 to 10:15. January 25: (Friday): The Colima Folk-Ballet Company (a living museum of 100 year old Mexican dances will perform two 1-hour shows specifically designed for the young viewer. This event will occur at Memorial Auditorium, 551 Serra Mall Stanford University, Palo Alto. Performances will be at 10:00 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. Tickets are $5.00 and can be ordered in blocks for schools and classes. To schedule your group's attendance at this special event, please email Colima2002@aol.com as soon as possible. January 26: (Saturday): The Colima Folk-Ballet Company (a living museum of 100 year old Mexican dances will perform two performances of Suenos de Plata. This event will occur at Memorial Auditorium, 551 Serra Mall Stanford University, Palo Alto. Performances will be at 2:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for students, seniors and children under 12 when purchased in advance, or $25.00 adults and $17.00 for students, seniors and chlidren under 12 when purchased at the door. Usually 1 "beginner" level dance and one "intermediate/advanced" A group of anywhere from 5-15 goes out to a nearby eatery afterwards until 11:00 PM.

First four Fridays:

Changs International Folk Dancers: Meets the first four Fridays of each month at 8 PM at the 7th Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1329 - 7th Avenue (between Irving and Judah) in San Francisco. Teaching on the first two Fridays, party night on the third Friday, and requests and other fun programming on the fourth Friday; call ahead as the schedule varies at times. The Mid-Peninsula Scandinavian Dance does Scandinavian couple turning dances to recorded and live music at the Carriage House in Holbrook Palmer Park, 150 Watkins Avenue in Atherton from 7:30 - 10:30 P.M. Instruction is beginner to intermediate. Admission is $4.00.
